Arachnia’s Lair is a spider-web strewn danger zone in Free Realms beyond the dark and creepy Briarwood Maze – an area that has always reminded us of the hedge maze from the movie The Shining.

Free Realms Launches Speedway Thunder – Mini Expansion

As promised at Fan Faire 2009, SOE has launched its first of several mini expansions, this one being a high-octane Free Realms kart racing and demolition derby called Speedway Thunder.

“It’s fast cars, epic crashes and thrill-a-minute turns.  40 quests for EACH job!”

New karts are available at prices ranging from 300 to 700 Station Cash points (3 – 7 bucks in “real life” US money) two new racetracks – Sandstorm and Thunder Falls but perhaps most significantly the devs have added player Garages where you can:

  • store and tune up your rides as much as you’d like.
  • View multiple angles of your car with a new garage camera controller!
  • Access your garage by speaking to the mechanics outside the raceways!
New garage locations allow you to customize your demo kart

New garage locations allow you to customize your demo kart

The reason we are paying close attention to this final element is that it means that one day it might be feasible to actually enter buildings in the game, or create guild houses or even personal living quarters.  Perhaps even customizable living quarters like they did in Everquest 2.

Here’s a tip on how to get started with the new Demo Derby expansion:

Visit Bill Riddly in Seaside and use these clues to complete a hidden quest!
*
Clue #1
Rain or shine, this rockstar racer always rushes to the finish line.
But, chillin’ with fans all day, when is she ever at the raceway?
*
Clue #2
Never raced – don’t know how well he’d do,
This fluttering guy has a name to live up to.
Find him roaming amidst the hub-bub,
That is, if you can catch up!
*
Clue #3
A vacation by the sea, can be too relaxing, actually.
Even though retired, he still wants more kart tires.

Now get out there and have fun, but dont forget to bring your helmet!

Free Realms Casually Breezes Past the 4M Subscriber Mark and News From Fan Faire in Vegas

A recent Tweet from Free Realms community manager “Pex,” writing from the Fan Faire in Vegas: “Just heard that next week will hit 4 million accounts.”

There is no official announcement yet, but the time between every subsequent million subscribers seems tio be getting ever shorter.  I can personally attest to the fact that logging in to the world of – (uh, what IS the name of the land of Free Realms) “Free Realms” becomes more and more like skydiving into the middle of a summer rock concert – lots of faces running around hollering about wanting people to join their guild.  Considering the young target audience, this could become very tedious.  At least in WoW, there was a kind of allegiance to one’s named server – in FR you just hop on whatever server number and deal.

Free Realms really is a fascinating experiment – so much like the world’s most popular/successful MMO – World of Warcraft, but so different in terms of its desired userbase.  It may very well be that this Fisher Price ideology becomes its undoing when an eventual sea change in its population takes place.

In the meantime – some other interesting tidbits reported from the show:

- A new Dwarven homeland was shown that will appear in a future update. Druid job will be part of the new desert land.

- Soccer is coming to Free Realms this summer! Guilds will have matching uniforms.

- Demo Derby and race driver will get 40 quests to lvl 20. Garages will become available for customizing your own car.

How To Start a Guild In Free Realms

Unlike in World of Warcraft where starting a guild required convincing ten other players (usually strangers) to sign up and then paying ten gold (again not an easy task for younger characters) creating your own little clique in Free Realms is as easy as finding the Friends List icon, clicking the guild button and setting a name.  But wait!  What the splash page doesn’t tell you is that you will have to be level fifteen in at least one job.

Having a guild can greatly improve gameplay as it brings a more consistent sense of community, resource sharing and family to the gameplay.  The downside of a running a guild is that if you are not selective, you may have to deal with obnoxious gamers who spam requests for help to your guild chat and this can eventually start to feel like a real job that you are not getting paid for.

But the level of complexity this seemingly simple addition adds to the world of Free Realms can not be understated.  It is a massively multiplayer game, after all, and learning how to manage, coordinate, complete goals and organize groups of real people is one of the truly unique features of MMO gameplay.

This, in tandem with the promise of richer story lines in the FR world, promises to make it a far richer game than it was at launch and likely even create some bona fide Free Realms addicts – it is inevitable, the formula always works, for better or worse.

How soon will it be before we start seeing Free Realms epic items on ebay?
